6th Annual LCI Governor's Cup: a good-natured, charity fishing derby
The LCI Governor's Cup is a fundraising catch-and-release fishing derby. The purpose of this event is to focus attention on Lake Champlain fisheries issues, water quality challenges, conservation, and the fishing heritage in an enjoyable, relaxed atmosphere while raising funds for the Next Generation Fund and the Champlain Fisheries Recovery Initiative—a lake-wide effort to restore the watershed to its once former glory.
No boats are needed as all fishing will take place from the fishing pier at the access area, enabling all to share their thoughts with the Governor and legislators while fishing. The event will conclude with the ceremonial awarding of the LCI Governor’s Cup trophy to the team who catches the heaviest amount of fish. The winning team members’ names will be engraved on the trophy ensuring immortality.
Teams of up to four anglers compete in this fun fundraising event. Each non-governmental team generously donates $500, while members of the Vermont and New York delegations participate with no requested donation. However, LCI graciously accept all donations ... after all, the lake needs all the support it can get!

It was a great honor – and a lot of fun – to participate in the 3rd annual LCI Governor’s Cup. This event is a great way to highlight Vermont’s unmatched outdoor resources and deepen our commitment to Lake Champlain and the state’s fisheries, while benefiting great causes. I thank LCI for putting on another successful derby and look forward to this tradition continuing with our next Governor.
Vermont Governor Jim Douglas - Commenting on his last Governor's Cup as Governor
I just wanted to thank you for inviting ECHO to the Governor's Cup. I had totally forgotten about the thrill of hooking a fish and catching those two bass took me right back to time spent with my dad and grandfather fishing. It's often moments like those that help us reconnect all over again and further inspire us to protect what we love and cherish about the outdoors. So, thank you for the moment you created for me this week and for the opportunities you and your organization provide for people from all over to strengthen their connection with Lake Champlain.
Bridget Butler, Voices for the Lake Manager - Reflecting on the 2010 event
What a memorable morning it was to share some time with my brother, friends and the people who work hard to make our lake clean, clear, and full of fish. It was a great feeling putting all technology aside, and relaxing on a river bank with a single pole, a hook, and some worms. Our team caught six different species of fish in a short amount of time in the same spot. It shows the abundance of fish Lake Champlain has to offer to the average fisherman, people should take advantage of this great resource.
