Why Invest In Lake Champlain International, Inc.?

Make a Difference

When you volunteer, make a donation, or become a member of LCI, you validate our commitment to conserve, restore and revitalize Lake Champlain. You are also sending a personal message that you support our efforts to improve fisheries, encourage youth and family angling, and raise awareness of the many issues facing the Lake Champlain watershed and its communities.

Restore the Glory of the Champlain Fisheries

Our Fisheries Recovery Initiative focuses on improving habitat for many of the gamefish that attract anglers to Lake Champlain. Anglers have seen the size and numbers of their catch dwindle over the past decade. The Fisheries Recovery Initiative aims to reverse this trend and restore abundant and healthy fish populations to Lake Champlain and sustain them for future anglers.

Invest in Our Youth and Carry on the Heritage

Fishing is a fun, easy to learn, and exciting activity that teaches kids positive life skills.  Among these important life skills are respect of nature, stewardship, decision-making, problem solving, goal setting, patience and camaraderie. LCI supports many programs to encourage our youth to take up the sport of fishing. Among these programs is our Fishing for Friends partnership with HowardCenter and the School Fishing Club Grant Program. Fishing for Friends is a mentoring initiative to raise the funds necessary to match responsible role models with interested children. To date, LCI Anglers and others have contributed nearly $19,000 to this worthy and necessary undertaking. We instituted The School Fishing Club Grants to encourage teachers and parents to establish after-school programs. Grants will be made available to schools to provide the equipment necessary and supplemental funds to get kids on our rivers and lakes with fishing poles in hand.

Learn About Lake Issues

LCI stays abreast of all issues affecting our angling heritage and the conservation of our Lake. From topics such as cormorants to VHS, LCI ensures you will have the latest information so you can stay informed about the opportunities and challenges before us. Advance Common Sense

Stewardship

LCI also raises awareness and sponsors educational seminars on important issues that face Lake Champlain. Among these is the lamprey issue. Over 800 people signed our Lamprey Petition, and our voices were heard. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department was granted the permits necessary and successfully completed the 2007 lamprey control treatment at the scientifically demonstrated safe and effective level of 1.3 mlc. In an effort to draw attention to the positive contribution we all can make to water quality, LCI launched the Fish and Flowers program. Fish and Flowers encourages LCI Anglers, their families, and others to plant rain gardens around their homes and businesses. Rain gardens are proven to lessen the negative impacts that stormwater can have on our watersheds. Last year, LCI hosted a nationally renowned atmospheric physicist during The Great Spirits Seminar Series at the University of Vermont’s Ira Allen Chapel. Nearly 500 attended the lecture on the science and politics of global warming. In addition to these pressing issues, LCI is constantly engaged on the issues affecting water quality, habitat, fisheries health and lake access.
